A « Manangi » woman carrying her baby in time old fashion, in a shawl on her back. She is crossing the wooden terrace of her abode, which is also piled with sacks of animal feed and odd pots, including a silver teapot. The local people are still sheep and yak herders but many have switched from traditional agriculture to the hotel/tourist trade after the area was opened to outsiders in the late 1970’s. The  trail from Manang leads over the Thorong-la pass (5415m), a route which has been used for centuries to transport animal herds and for other trade. It is now part of a trekking route, the Annapurna circuit, through the  wild and beautiful mountains close to the Nepal/Tibet border.
