A hidden corner of Carouge, Geneva, Switzerland with the reflection of tree branches and early evening shadows. Carouge was designed by Italian architects in a mediterranean style in the second half of the 18th century, under the orders of the present ruler, the King of Sardinia.

The reflection on the left is of the ornate cast-iron decoration of the lantern attachment. Lighting up public spaces in Geneva was first attempted in about 1750, and by 1820 the first gas lights were installed, using coal gas. Electricity was a long time coming to light up public spaces, but Switzerland  was a pioneer with early street lighting in the 1880’s.

The reflected tree branches are from the London plane (platanus acerifolia). From the beginning of the 19th century Carouge has been planted with these ornamental plane trees.
