Sketches and photos taken one early morning in March 2014 on the path down from the Hotel Weisshorn.

The Weisshorn (4505m)  is the 5th highest summit in the Swiss Alps and separates the Zermatt valley from Val d'Anniviers. It was first climbed by John Tyndall, a prominent Irish physicist whose scientific studies led him to work in mountain environments.

The first ascension of the western summit of the Bisshorn (4135m) was made in 1884 by the English woman Elizabeth Barnaby and her Valaisan mountain guides. Mrs Barnaby was a pioneer in mountain climbing at a time when it was unthinkable for a woman to pursue such activities, even in a skirt ! She was a wealthy land owning lady in Ireland but moved to Switzerland to photograph and write about the Alps.
