A watercolour of the door of the Café du Marché on the side of the Rue St. Joseph in Carouge, before renovation.
.
Carouge was built between between 1760 -1770, by the King of Sardinia, who was also the Duke of Savoy (France). It was designed on a chequerboard plan, with buildings in the Franco/Italianate style lined around the existing trade routes from France and beyond, into the city of Geneva. Today the buildings and « piazzas » of old Carouge remain and are filled with boutiques, cafés, restaurants, antique shops and galleries.
