This chorten (Tibetan) or stupa (Nepali) lies on the banks of the Kali Gandaki river in Kagbeni, a medieval village in Mustang, Nepal. The chorten is a vital focal point in every landscape in Nepal, whether a gleaming white elegant structure or a simpler more rugged mud and stone creation on a lonely mountain pass. The basic structure consists of a square foundation symbolising the earth , a dome to represent water and the crown, usually with a shaft to hold prayer flags. It is an important holy monument which originated in India to house relics of the Buddha. Nowadays some contain relics but most contain offerings and prayers.
